During my time in big-box retail, I noticed an alarming number of customers opting for small, single-gun pistol safes. Many of these customers were new gun owners and not very familiar with the importance of securing their firearms, but there were also more than a few avid shooters that still opted for safes that were anything but safe. Many of those small safes are little more than glorified boxes with insecure 3-tumbler locks (or worse!).
A good gun safe, especially the small flat safes for pistols, must be secure both in its locking mechanism and its immovability. I would personally recommend Hornady’s RAPiD line of safes, which have locks that use cylindrical cores in addition to RFID entry. While better options do exist, I find the RAPiD line provides good security for the price in addition to a solid construction. Check them out at https://www.hornady.com/security/rapid-safes/. Be sure to affix the safe securely to a solid surface so the entire thing doesn’t simply walk off to be opened later at the thief’s convenience.
